OREM - The game looked as if it was heading to overtime when the Lakers finally connected a pass play. QB Todd Aubrey found Devin Mickles all alone along the right side and Mickles went 58-yards for the game winning score with under a minute left in the game to give the Lakers a 28-21 victory over Mountain View.
Bonneville who was the fourth seed going from Region 5, knocked off the Bruins who were the second seeded team. However it wasn’t the upset that many people are calling it. MV has struggled late in the season, including a 32-0 loss to Orem to end the regular season. The Lakers have now won four straight games after a brutal 3-3 Region season.
The Lakers 5-5 on the season, got two Adam Farnsworth field goals early in the game to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Moutain View countered late in the first quarter with a Anthonly Heimuli 58-yard burst to give MV a 7-6 lead after one period.
Bonneville responded with a lengthy second quarter drive, capped off by a Austin Richards 14-yard run. Richards then successfully nailed the two-point conversion to help the Lakers to a 14-7 lead. MV then came right back with a 80-yard drive of their own with the normally tough Laker defense, certainly their strength throughout the year, giving up a Dustin Thacker-to-Flint Gardner TD to knot the score at 14-14 at halftime.
Both teams scored once in the third, MV took advantage of a Laker fumble in the endzone and scored, while Austin Land found paydirt with a 15-yard run.
With the win, the Lakers get the chance to play powerhouse Cottonwood Friday.
